A Shinai is essentially a bamboo sword, made up of four bamboo slats (take) held together at the tip by a leather cap (saki-gawa) and at the other end by a leather handle (tsuka-gawa). These two parts are connected by a nylon cord (tsuru).
Because of its lightweight design, it allows for very fast movements. When used with a bogu, the shinai enables practitioners to engage in full-force and full-speed combat in a safe manner.
